The Power of Books
Position Statement: National Association for the Education of Young Children and the International Reading Association say “failing to give children literacy experiences until they are school-age can severely limit the reading and writing levels they ultimately attain.”

EARLY LITERACY CAN BE NURTURED
- Use rich language
- Encourage children to speak in complex sentences
- Read aloud daily
- Ask children what story characters are feeling
- Give children opportunities to tell and act out stories
- Read fiction and non-fiction
- Encourage children’s questions
- Provide “new” and varied experiences in the classroom
- Provide outdoor exploration and field trips
- Reach thematic units
- Vary classroom centers weekly
- Print awareness
- Read “Big Books”
- Read Alphabet Books
- Appeal to their senses – draw in the sand, bake cookies shaped like letters
- Read Rhyming Books
- Read books that play on sounds such as Dr. Suess
- Read sing and recite nursery rhymes
- Incorporate puppets, finger plays, etc.
- Post an alphabet chart (eye level)
- Sing the alphabet song
Types /Genres of Books
- Mother Goose
- Alphabet and Counting
- Wordless Books
- Informational Books
- Contemporary Realistic Fiction
- Historical Fiction
Mother Goose, a collection of short poems that go back hundreds of years. Many of the poems were politically inspired, but the child lies the sounds of the language and the child’s imagination.
Poetry, is the artistic expression of ideas and feelings though a rhythmical composition of imaginative and beautiful words.
Alphabet and Counting books – These books help children develop the concept. The topic should be clear.
Wordless books – (which are a format, not a genre) are profusely illustrated books in which the pictures are essential to complete understanding and enjoyment of the story.
Informational books – emphasize documented facts.
Contemporary realistic fiction – includes stories that could happen to people or animals. The characters are made up, but their actions and feelings are similar to those of people we could know.
Folktales – the ancient stories or poems of many cultures, originate in the oral, or storytelling tradition.
Historical fiction – is set in a time period which blends authentic historical settings and fact with imaginary characters and plot.
Biography – tells the story of an actual person’s life, or portion of his life
Modern fantasy – refers to works of literature in which the events, settings, or the characters are outside the realm of possibility.
